Rare Almanac — Terms of Use

These are the rules for using Rare Almanac. They are short and written in plain words on purpose. If you use the mod, these are the terms you are using it under.

1. Read this part first

Two things matter more than anything else on this page. They are at the top because burying them would be dishonest, not because we are required to.

1.1 This is not an official mope.io thing

Rare Almanac is a fan-made mod. It is made by one person as a hobby.

It is not made by, run by, approved by, endorsed by, checked by, or connected to mope.io or the company behind it. Nobody at mope.io has looked at it, agreed to it, or blessed it. If Rare Almanac breaks or does something wrong, that is on us, not on them. Do not contact mope.io about Rare Almanac — they did not make it and cannot help you with it.

The name "mope.io" and the game's pictures belong to their owners, not to us. Rare Almanac never copies, stores, or re-sends the game's artwork. When you see an animal picture, your own browser is loading it from mope.io exactly as it always would.

1.2 Using this mod might get your mope.io account banned, and we cannot promise otherwise

Please read this properly. It is the most important sentence on this page.

mope.io has not published any rule about mods like this one. Not a rule that allows them. Not a rule that forbids them. We looked, and the subject is simply not covered anywhere we could find.

And we have to tell you something further: mope.io's privacy policy mentions a document called the "User Agreement", and we have never been able to find that document. We do not know what is in it. It is possible — we cannot rule it out — that it contains a rule against third-party mods that we have not read. We have not checked it, because we could not locate it. So when we say "the rules do not address mods", what we honestly mean is "the rules we were able to find do not address mods." There may be rules we have not seen.

Meanwhile, mope.io does have working tools to ban and warn accounts, and a queue for appeals. There is no published list of what gets an account banned, and no published standard for how appeals are decided.

So:

Nobody can promise you that running this mod is safe for your mope.io account. We certainly cannot. There is a real risk, we cannot measure it, and if your mope.io account is banned or restricted because you used Rare Almanac, we cannot appeal it for you and we cannot get it back for you. That risk is yours, and you take it by choosing to use this.

This is why the mod does nothing over the network until you turn sync on, and why the leaderboard is off again after that. Each step is a separate choice, so you can stop at any point.

If that risk is not one you want, the honest answer is: do not install this. You will not miss anything you need to play mope.io.

2. What Rare Almanac is

It watches what the mope.io game shows you and keeps a gallery of the rare animals you have found, plus a score and some trophies.

It works completely on your own computer. An optional extra called sync copies your collection to our server so you can get it back if your browser is wiped. A second optional extra puts a name and score you choose on a public leaderboard.

Discord services added by Step 40, 2026-08-22. Where they are offered, you can separately choose to link a Discord account. That lets us attribute a public board row to a Discord identity we can contact, and may be required before a public row is admitted. It also gives a linked player who has lost every device another way to add a new browser by signing in with Discord. Linking is optional: declining it does not remove sync, your collection, score, trophies, import or export.

A device added through Discord waits 24 hours before it can be used and is permanently restricted after the wait. It cannot revoke another device, rotate the recovery code, erase the account, change the linked mope.io profile, unlink or re-link Discord, download the personal-data export, retract the imported, migrated or attested collection data, remove an item, import records, turn public sharing on, or set or change a board name. Withdrawing public sharing, clearing a board name and restoring a removed item remain allowed. Use an unrestricted device for any refused operation. A Discord login proves control of that Discord session; it does not prove who the person at the keyboard is.

3. It is free, it is a hobby, and it may stop

Rare Almanac costs nothing. There is no paid version, no subscription, and nothing to buy. We do not want your money and there is no way to give us any.

It is run by one person, in their spare time, on a cheap rented server.

That means it can stop. We might switch the server off, run out of time or money, lose interest, or decide it is not worth the trouble. We will try to give warning and to let you get a copy of your data first, but we are not promising a notice period and we cannot promise the server will be there tomorrow.

Your collection lives in your own browser. If our server disappeared tonight, your collection would still be there in the morning. That is deliberate.

4. No warranty, and what we are not responsible for

Rare Almanac is provided as is. We do not promise that it works, that it is correct, that it will keep working, or that it fits any particular purpose.

We are one person giving something away for free. Please treat it as such.

None of this takes away rights you have by law that cannot be signed away — including, if you live in the EU, your rights over your own data. Nothing here limits our responsibility for anything we do deliberately or recklessly.

5. Rules for using it

Do not:

We may stop your access to the server if you do any of these. Your local collection is yours and we cannot touch it.

6. You must be 16 to use sync

The mod itself has no age limit. Sync and the leaderboard Sync, the leaderboard, and the optional Discord link/enrolment services are for players aged 16 and over. Corrected by Step 40, 2026-08-22.

You confirm your age yourself, with a tick box. Nothing checks it. We chose it that way on purpose, because the alternative — asking children for ID or for a parent's details — would mean collecting far more personal information than this hobby project should ever hold.

If you told us you are under 16, you will not be offered a leaderboard name, and no row for you will appear on any public board. Everything else — your full collection, your score, your trophies, and the whole leaderboard including everybody else's rows — works normally. You are not being punished; we are just not publishing a child's name to the internet.

7. The leaderboard is a privilege, not a right

The public leaderboard is something we offer, not something you are owed.

We can take it away. We can remove your row, blank your name, or stop offering the board altogether — for a good reason, or because we are shutting it down. We do not have to run a public board at all.

Being removed from the board never affects your collection, your score, your trophies, or your ability to keep using sync. It is one row on one page.

Your name

The name you pick must:

Names are checked for shape, for clashes, and — since 6 August 2026 — against a list of slurs and other words we will not publish. That check is not clever and it is not complete. It does not understand context, it does not know every word, and some perfectly innocent names look exactly like words on the list. So a person still reads reports and still acts by hand, and that has not changed.

If your own name is refused and you think that is wrong, say so — the message you get will tell you how. We would rather hear from you than have you settle for a name you did not want.

Getting a name taken down

Email rarealmanac@gmail.com. That is the whole system. There is no form and no ticket queue.

We aim to reply within 72 hours and to have acted within 7 days. If a name is aimed at a specific person, or is harassment, we act as soon as we read it — blanking a name costs nothing and harms nobody, so we blank first and discuss afterwards.

We are one person. If we are asleep, ill, or travelling, it will take longer. We are telling you that rather than pretending to a service level we cannot keep.

If we act against you

If we blank your name or take your row down, we will tell you why in plain words.

If you think we were wrong, email rarealmanac@gmail.com and say so. The same address, read by the same person. We aim to reply within 72 hours and to give you a final answer within 14 days. There is no appeal board and no second reviewer — there is one person, who will read what you wrote and think again.

A blanked name is not a punishment and not a mark on your account. It puts you back to having no name, which is the ordinary state everybody starts in. You can set a new one.

8. Your stuff is yours

Your collection and the name you choose are yours. We do not claim to own them. We use them only to run the service and, if you turned the leaderboard on, to show your chosen name and score on it.

9. Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. If a change is important, we will show it in the mod and ask you to read it and agree again. If you do not agree, you can turn sync off and keep using the mod on your own computer, or ask us to delete your data.

We should be exact about what waits while you decide, because the old wording here was not. Being asked again does not switch your syncing off. What waits is the settings the mod fetches from the server and the buttons that sit behind the explanation — your collection keeps going up in the meantime. Saying "sync stops" would have sent you looking for a fault that is not there.

Corrected Step 40, 2026-08-22. "before sync keeps running" was false of the shipped code: consented() in src/main.js reads the sync switch alone, so a new notice version does not gate evidence sending. manifestConsented() is what gates, and docs/engineering/release.md had already struck the same claim in place.

10. Law and disputes

The person who runs Rare Almanac is in Russia. The server is in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.

If you live in the EU, nothing here takes away your right to bring a case in your own country, or to complain to your own data-protection authority, or to rely on the consumer protections your own country gives you. Those rights hold regardless of what this page says.
